There is great debate of the benefits of cholesterol and alcohol. For many people, even with high cholesterol alcohol is an evening stress reliever. Many people have that evening cocktail to unwind for the hassles of the day. Under these circumstances, alcohol seems to benefit those with high cholesterol, by reducing their cholesterol levels. Alcohol also thins the blood, which may also help prevent blood clots and reduce inflammation. Alcohol has been reported to both, lower LDL (bad cholesterol) which is low density lipoprotein, and to raise HDL (good cholesterol) which is high density lipoprotein. Both of these measures are necessary for a healthy cholesterol level. Alcohol, specifically red wine, is high in antioxidants and prevents the oxidation (or absorption) or LDL. Always consult your physician before changing or modifying your diet, especially before adding an alcohol regimen, as underlying health concerns may be present. Only your doctor can advise you on these health issues.
